Overview

The República Democrática de São Tomé e Principe (R.D.S.T.P.) is a relatively small and young state beyond the horizons of globally significant regions and spheres of influence.

The island state consists of the main island of São Tomé (860 km2) and of Principe (104 km2), which lies 136 km to the north, as well as some small, mainly unpopulated rocky offshore islands. The island of São Tomé, with the capital city of the same name, lies in the Atlantic off West Africa exactly on the equator. The shortest distance to the continent of Africa is 250 km directly west (from São Tomé to Gabon) and 400 km north (from Principe to Nigeria).
